We tried to leave the giant behemoth of Ürümqi on foot. Without realizing it, we became caught up in a police dragnet. The whole city was searching for us, and it was only in the evening, while we were already looking for a hotel, that the police caught up with us. It turned out that we had walked past a school and spent five minutes watching the students, who were moving across the schoolyard in large groups for a roll call. One of the many cameras had seen this, and its automated software flagged our unusual behavior as suspicious, triggering a police search for us. In the end, three police cars showed up. But we were able to explain the situation, and it was resolved relatively quickly. One of the officers was even kind enough to drive us to our hotel, which was 30 kilometers away, in his private car after his shift!
Two days after crossing Ürümqi, the capital of Xinjiang Province, we left the Silk Road and turned north. We then faced a 180-kilometer stretch through the desert with no places to sleep or stock up on supplies. But the problem solved itself, as it happened: a colleague of Guang’s happened to be accompanying us with a vehicle during those days. So he was able to drop us off on the route in the morning and pick us up again in the evening.
On May 24, I had a surprise in store for Guang! The day before, I had secretly asked our companion to buy chocolates, red roses, and a bottle of sparkling wine — which was really not easy for him in this remote area. In addition, I wanted him to print out a photo of the two of us, which he also managed to do. The next morning, in our breakfast restaurant, I was able to delight Guang with all these lovely things in celebration of our 30th wedding anniversary! Because on May 24, 1996, we had had our civil marriage ceremony in Wiesbaden.
We are now just a few kilometers from the point on Earth farthest from any ocean. The Arctic Ocean and the Indian Ocean are each 2,500 kilometers away. Depending on whether one counts the Gulf of the Ob River as part of the ocean or not, this point shifts considerably. In any case, we can still treat ourselves to fish and seafood here.
Today we have arrived in Takeshiken, a small, remote border town. From here, it is only 15 kilometers to the Mongolian border, which we plan to cross tomorrow. Mongolia would then be the 25th country on this journey. Due to the vast emptiness of the land, we have to plan carefully — but there remain uncertainties that we can only overcome with optimism.

Wir versuchten zu Fuss, das riesige Moloch Ürümqi zu verlassen. Dabei gerieten wir, ohne es zu bemerken, in eine Rasterfahndung der Polizei. In der ganzen Stadt wurden wir gesucht und erst am Abend, als wir schon auf Hotelsuche waren, wurden wir von der Polizei gestellt. Es stellte sich heraus, dass wir an einer Schule vorbeigegangen waren und dort 5 Minuten lang die Schüler beobachtet hatten, die sich in Hundertschaften zum grossen Appell auf dem Schulhof bewegten. Das hatte eine der vielen Kameras gesehen und dessen automatische Software hatte unser ungewöhnliches Verhalten als verdächtig detektiert und damit eine polizeiliche Suche nach uns ausgelöst. Am Ende fanden sich drei Polizeiwagen bei uns ein. Wir konnten die Sache aber erklären und alles löste sich relativ schnell wieder auf. Einer der Polizisten war sogar so nett, uns nach seinem Dienst in seinem Privatwagen in das 30 km entfernte Hotel zu bringen!
Zwei Tage, nachdem wir Ürümqi, die Hauptstadt der Provinz Xinjiang durchquert hatten, verliessen wir die Seidenstrasse und bogen nach Norden ab. Es folgte 180 km langer Abschnitt durch die Wüste ohne irgendwelche Übernachtungsmöglichkeiten oder Versorgungmöglichkeiten. Das Problem löste sich für uns aber wie von selbst: denn zufälligerweise begleitete uns in diesen Tagen ein Kollege von Guang mit einem Fahrzeug. So konnte er uns morgens auf die Strecke bringen und abends wieder abholen.
Am 24.Mai hatte ich für Guang eine Überraschung parat! Am Vortag hatte ich unseren Begleiter heimlich damit beauftragt, Pralinen, rote Rosen, eine Flasche Sekt zu besorgen, was für ihn wirklich nicht einfach war in dieser abgelegenen Gegend. Zusätzlich wünschte ich noch, dass er ein Bild von uns beiden ausdruckt, was ihm ebenso gelang. Am nächsten Morgen konnte ich Guang in unserem Frühstücksrestaurant mit all diesen schönen Dingen zu unserem 30. Hochzeitstag erfreuen! Am 24. Mai 1996 hatte nämlich unsere standesamtliche Trauung in Wiesbaden stattgefunden.
Wir befinden uns hier nur wenige Kilometer von dem Ort entfernt, der am weitesten auf der Erde vom Meer entfernt ist. Das Nordpolarmeer und der Indische Ozean sind jeweils 2500 km entfernt. Je nachdem, ob man den Golf des Flusses Ob als Meer hinzuzählt oder nicht, verschiebt sich dieser Punkt nicht unwesentlich. Auf jeden Fall können wir uns hier trotzdem an Fisch und Meeresfrüchten laben.
Heute sind wir in dem kleinen, abseits gelegenen Ort Grenzort Takeshiken angekommen. Von hier aus sind es nur noch 15 km bis zur mongolischen Grenze, die wir morgen passieren wollen. Die Mongolei wäre dann mein 25. Land auf dieser Reise. Wegen der grossen Leere des Landes müssen wir sorgfältig planen – aber es bleiben Ungewissheiten, die wir nur mit Optimismus beseitigen können.
