Timing & Packlist

Timing:

The seasonal timing is crucial for a pleasant hike, if not a prerequisite. Due to seasonal extreme temperatures in Asia, the best starting time for Lisbon would be the end of February. Since I can’t make it this year, the start will be in February 2025! This gives me more time for planning, and you get more time to stay curious!

This a scenario illustrates a 30 km per day hiking average. Starting in February would avoid extreme temperatures of the continental climate in Asia.

Packlist

You may think the longer the hike, the longer should be the packing list. I would say the opposite is the case. If you carry a useless item on a day trip, it is clearly less severe than carrying it around the world. It is useful to minimize the

  • number of items
  • volume
  • weight.

To make things easier and less messy, it’s best to bring fewer things along. However, a thought-out packing system may let you manage well even a long packing list. Moreover, a substantial volume necessitates a more substantial backpack. A large backpack is not practical inside indoor spaces and also outside during a storm. However, the key factor for an enjoyable hike is the weight. The hike simply gets strenuous when the backpack weighs anywhare from 12 to 15 kg. Here is my list for a 4 kg backpack:

    ItemWeight [g]
    Backpack (Zpacks Arc Blast 55l)620
    Tent (Zpacks Duplex Classic)605
Sleeping Bag (Cumulus Xlite 2°C Comfort)465
    Sleeping Pad (NeoAir UberLite)326
    Electric Kettle422
    Quilted Jacket325
    Toilet Bag250
    Long pants (spare)200
    Windcheater (thin)151
    Umbrella115
    Long shirt (spare)150
    Food-Box (empty)109
    2 Pair of Socks (spare)100
    Powerbank231
    Bag for Cables90
    Tea-Box76
    Sunscreen54
    Underpants (spare)54
    Passport49
    Sunglasses inclusive Case42
    Credit Card and Cash42
    Plastic Bag for Clothes38
    Plastic Rain Cover33
    Swiss Knife (small)21
    Cotton Food Bag21
    Big Zip-Bag11
    Pen10
    Small Zip-Bag7
    Spoon-Fork7

Items for a 4 kg backpack

In addition to the backpack, I wear the following items on my body, adding another 1.8 kg.

    ItemWeight [g]
    Hiking Sandales (Keen Arroyo II)746
    Hiking Poles (Backcountry Carbon 2.0)286
    Smartphone271
    Shorts195
    Shirt109
    Underpants54
    Socks50
    Hat69
    Headphones37
    Hiking Gloves28

Items worn at the body (1.8 kg)

Now we are around 6 kg. On top of that, depending on the next upcoming food store or fountain, I need to take 1–5 kg food and water. So I will carry around 10 kg with me. During the time Guang accompanies me, I will also take part of her stuff as well.
